The Samsung XM3 sold in South Korea is, except for the logos, the Renault Arkana, which will be marketed in Europe in the spring of 2021. Given the good sales figures of the XM3, Renault can be confident for this coupe SUV which will also have an E-Tech hybrid offer.
A few weeks after its revelation at the Seoul show (in March), and especially after its commercial launch (opening of orders at the end of February), the Samsung XM3 has already conquered 22,175 people, of which 10,000 have, according to Renault, already delivered. Success for this coupé SUV, whose presentation in Europe, under the name Renault Arkana, is still planned for this year, despite the cancellation of the Paris Motor Show. However, we will have to wait another year before seeing it in concession.
However, Renault is careful not for the moment to officially mention this future Arkana. Its news, in addition to the reopening of its factories, concerns the arrival of the hybrid versions (E-Tech and E-Tech Plug-in) of the Clio, Captur, and Mégane restylée.
Assembled at the Renault Samsung Motors plant in Busan, Korea, the Samsung XM3 is based on the modern CMF / B technical base of the second-generation Renault Captur. The technical kinship is obvious onboard where we immediately recognize the furniture of the Captur 2, illustrated in particular by its imposing 9.3-inch vertical format touch screen, coupled with digital instrumentation via a 10-inch panel.
However, the XM3 is not a simple Captur with a trunk, it has harmoniously stretched its lines, without backpack effect since, compared to the Captur, its wheelbase increases by 8 cm (2.72 m) and its length gain 31 cm to reach 4.54 m. Enough to allow him, despite his tilted bezel, to offer a generous offer (513 l).
In the driving aids department, the XM3 can receive the adaptive cruise control with stop and restart function, active lane-keeping, Multi-Sense, 360 ° camera, or even the automatic parking brake.
Arkana: Renault’s reconquest weapon?
Precisely, this format which intersects it in the range between the SUV of segment C: Renault Kadjar (4.49 m) and that of segment D: Renault Koléos (4.67 m), while it is only a segment B model is not going to make things easier. In fact and especially by its prices, the Renault Arkana will be positioned between the Captur and the Kadjar.
This first SUV-coupe offered in Europe by a generalist manufacturer (In China, Skoda markets the Kodiaq GT), will also have the role of mitigating the erosion of sales of the Renault Mégane. Indeed, the compact sedan is shunned by some customers who have not found their happiness with the compact Kadjar SUV. To prevent them from competing, the Arkana will offer them a unique alternative with two advantages: an attractive and trendy SUV silhouette, coupled with an attractive and dynamic coupé line. Anything to please?
No diesel, but a hybrid …
Mechanically, the Renault Arkana, which will be, like the Samsung XM3, made in Korea, will only have petrol engines. Namely, the 1.3 TCe block available in versions of 130 and 155 hp. These two proposals will be completed by a non-rechargeable hybrid variant called 1.6 E-Tech developing 140 hp. This technology is strictly identical to that offered by the Renault Clio 5 hybrid. It will also arrive on the Captur in early 2021.
Unveiled in summer 2018 at the Moscow Motor Show in the form of a concept car, the standard Russian Renault Arkana will lead its life alongside the Samsung XM3 and Renault Arkana from Korea and Western Europe. Unlike them, it rests on the base (B0 +) of the second generation Dacia Duster and also borrows its dashboard and its “small” touch screen in a horizontal format.
This technical choice guarantees low prices: 999,000 rubles (equivalent to € 13,960) at entry-level with an “old” 1.6 atmospheric engine. It comes above the 1.3 TCe block of 150 hp, and that’s it! Without forgetting the possibility of having an all-wheel drive, hp, an element that neither the XM3 nor the Arkana will have …
Discover the Renault of Korea
In Korea, the Renault Samsung Motors range borrows a lot from the Renault range we know in Europe. In the land of calm Morning, dealers have the Samsung QM3, which is none other than the first generation Renault Captur, the Samsung QM6 (second-generation Renault Koléos).
And for sedans, the range revolves around the Samsung SM3 ZE equivalent to the Fluence ZE, the Samsung SM5, the clone of the Renault Latitude, of the Samsung SM7 which is only an extended version of the SM5 and, between the two, the Samsung SM6 is inserted, twin, with logos, of our Renault Talisman. Note that there is no Clio or Mégane (without trunk) in the range, these silhouettes do not make the recipe in Asia. However, since 2018, the Renault Twizzy is no longer produced in Valladolid (Spain) but in Busan (Korea) where the models sold in Europe come from, which also explains its presence in the Samsung range.
Finally, the Korean equivalent of the high-end label Initiale Paris is not called Initiale Seoul, but more simply: Première. It is affixed to the QM6 (Koléos) and SM6 (Talisman).
